You turn your wrist anxiously and there it is: a nasty scratch right in the middle of your dial.
If this situation sounds familiar, it's probably because your watch had a mineral crystal. At Urban Mods, we equip our creations with sapphire crystal. Why? Here's the unfiltered truth about these two materials.
1. Mineral Crystal: Practical, but Vulnerable 🧱
Mineral crystal is the standard in the mainstream watchmaking industry. It's a classic glass, heated or chemically treated to provide minimal impact resistance.
Its advantages? It's inexpensive to produce and possesses a certain flexibility. If it takes a violent frontal impact, it will tend to crack rather than shatter.
The problem? On the Mohs scale (which measures mineral hardness from 1 to 10), mineral crystal hovers around 5. This means a simple stone wall, sand, or a keyring in your pocket can permanently scratch it.
And a scratch on mineral crystal cannot be polished out: you have to replace the crystal.
2. Sapphire Crystal: The Transparent Armor 🛡️
Forget the blue gemstone. Watchmaking sapphire is a synthetic sapphire, made in a laboratory from aluminum oxide crystallized at very high temperatures.
Why is it the high-end choice?
On the Mohs scale, sapphire scores a 9. Only diamond (10) or extremely specific materials can scratch it. In normal urban conditions, your sapphire crystal will remain as pristine after five years as it was on day one.

Warning: Invincibility doesn't exist
Let's be clear and factual: sapphire crystal is not indestructible. Its extreme hardness (which prevents scratches) technically makes it more "brittle" than a mineral or acrylic crystal. If you drop your watch face-down on tile from a balcony, the sapphire won't scratch, but it can shatter into a thousand pieces.
It's a technical trade-off: we sacrifice a slight resistance to extreme shocks (which you are unlikely to experience) for total resistance to everyday scratches (which happen all the time).
3. The well-kept secret: Anti-Reflective (AR) coating 🕶️
Having a scratch-resistant crystal is good. Being able to tell the time without being dazzled is better.
Sapphire is naturally more reflective than mineral crystal. That's why, on our assemblies, we prioritize sapphire crystals with an anti-reflective (AR) coating on the inner surface.
This treatment (often visible due to a very slight bluish tint at certain angles) allows light to be absorbed rather than reflected. The result? The crystal seems to disappear, giving full prominence to the textures of your dial and the movement of your hands.
